Toyota recalls top sellers for loss of power steering

Toyota Motor said today is will recall some popular models for a defect that could kill power assist to the steering. It also will recall a handful of electric vehicles for a problem that could result in "a complete loss of drive power" with little warning.

The big car company said it knows of no accidents, injuries or deaths as a result of either issue.

The bigger group:

•110,000 2015 Camry, Camry hybrid, Highlander, Highlander hybrid and 2014-2015 RAV4 SUVs.

The automaker says a circuit board for the electric power steering "may have been damaged" during manufacturing. As a result, the vehicles could lose power-assist to the steering.

Unassisted manual steering still works, but it's much harder to steer the vehicle, especially at low speed — even more difficult than it is to operate a car without the power-steering feature in the first place.

Toyota says a warning light on the dashboard would illuminate when the problem occurs.

The defect "increases the risk of a crash," the car company said.

Camry is Toyota's best-seller in the U.S. It was the industry's No. 3 seller in February, bumping the Ram full-size pickup out of its customary third place on the charts.

The smaller group:

• About 2,500 of the 2012-2014 RAV4 EV battery vehicles.

Components in the electric motor assembly can unexpectedly shift to neutral due to a software issue, killing all drive power to the vehicle. It also would trigger a "Check EV System" warning light, Toyota says.

Without any power, the vehicle can't be quickly maneuvered out of harm's way, and the risk of a crash increases.

Owners will be notified by mail, Toyota says, and dealers will fix the vehicles for free

Toyota sedang menyiapkan mobil listrik baru yang diberi nama Smart INSECT  pada pameran elektronik CEATEC di Jepang. Smart INSECT (Information Network Social Electric City Transporter) adalah mobil listrik kursi tunggal yang menggunakan sensor-sensor gerak, pengenal suara dan perangkat lunak yang bisa memprediksi gerakan untuk berkomunikasi dengan pengemudi.

Menurut Toyota, Smart INSECT menggambarkan serangga kecil yang bisa terbang kesana-kemari dengan sayap besarnya, sama seperti kendaraan ini bisa bergerak bebas  dengan menggunakan jaringan informasi.  Atap gullwing Smart INSECT bisa dibuka hanya dengan mengibaskan tangan dan menggunakan software pengenal wajah untuk memastikan pengemudi adalah pemilik mobil.

Sensor great Smart INSECT bisa mendeteksi jika pemiliknya datang.  Dalam jarak tertentu, mobil ini langsung membuka pintu dan pemiliknya bisa langsung masuk ke mobil.  Dalam perjalanan, pengemudi bisa mendapat informasi lalulintas terkini dari Toyota Virtual Agent melalui smartphone.  Dengan smartphone pula, pengemudi bisa mengunci dan membuka kunci pintu dari dalam mobil. Dan masih banyak lagi fitur menarik.

Order New Avanza Achieve 33.000 Units

Although concerned about the shortage of supply, Toyota Indonesia was still able to smile this year. Because until the end of 2011, PT Toyota Astra Motor (TAM) is still hoping to touch sales of 310,000 units. Although many disorders, the national automotive market continues to rise.

TAM marketing director Joko Trisanyoto say, a chain effect of natural disasters in Japan and Thailand reduced the volume of sales from April to June and November.

Looking at sales data Gabungan Industri Kendaraan Bermotor Indonesia (Gaikindo), during the first eleven months of this year Toyota is already selling (retail) 287 692 units, up 12.5 percent from the same period in 2010 which is 255,683 units. November became Toyota's worst record since recorded the lowest sales this year, so stay 46.1 percent cut 16,771 units from 31,160 units in October.

Joko lamented the impact of flooding in the country is very large white elephant against Toyota in Indonesia. TAM so could not meet market share targets that have been determined earlier this year, a minimum of 36 percent and only 35.4 percent holding. "The problem is not we can not sell, but do not have the goods. It is unfortunate, but good-good market again," complained Joko.

TAM also apologized to prospective customers who still have to wait for delivery of the new Avanza as bookings continue to rise. Cars "million people" is already indented up to tens of thousands of units, since its launch inaugural 9 November 2011.

"Until December 5 (2011) 33 000 incoming orders have doubled the unit or from older models sold 14.000an per month. Our production is still not sufficient, hopefully consumers can be patient," please Joko.
